9 YEAR OLD DUMFRIES KARTING ACE STEPS ON THE PODIUM AT ROWRAH

9 Year old Heathhall primary pupil Kieran Conchie stepped on the podium for the first time at Cumbria Kart Racing Club in Rowrah. The circuit is renowned for being a technical and challenging circuit with large kerbs, tight hairpins and changes in gradient. With the track temperature dropping to -1 the start was delayed and once defrosted racing began. The cold temperature remained all day which made the normally challenging circuit even more so.

With round 1 of the Superone British Championship due next month many of the top drivers, aged up to 12 were competing to prepare for the following month. This did not phase Kieran and after 3 excellent performances in the qualifying heats lined up 3rd for the final. When the lights went out Kieran dropped a place into 4th but quickly took the position back and pushed away from the pack with 1st and 2nd place building a comfortable gap. At the chequered flag only 0.170s covered the top 3 with Kieran getting 3rd place and the fastest lap.

Kieran told DGWGO sports news “I just treated it like any other race and pushed away to build a lead with the top 3 but it feels amazing to have finished so well against some of the best drivers in the country especially as I’m only 9”

Kieran was supported by his dad doing the mechanics and although his mum and sister couldn’t be there, they could watch his progress on Internet live timing. Kieran would like to thank Andy from Clan Racing, Jess Hawkins, BRK racing karts and Building Craftsmen Dumfries
