Funding Announced for Curling Development in Stewartry

The Active Schools team in the Stewartry region have secured funding to fund 24 set of curling kits. This amounts to one for every school within the Stewartry plus each learning unit.

Hot on the heels of the region’s success of the men’s and ladies curling teams in the Beijing 2022 Olympics, the newly established partnership between Active Schools and Community sport, Disability Sport, Scottish Curling and The Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership has also enabled the creation of a programme of schools curling to be established. This will be rolled out at the start of the next academic year.

The funding and programme will mean that the Active Schools team in the Stewartry will be able to deliver class taster sessions, a curling disability sport event, a primary school curling competition and the Ready, Steady, Curl course as part of the secondary schools’ leadership programmes. That’s just the plan for year one.

The aim of the Active Schools Team is to also work alongside schools and communities in the region to establish Floor Curling community sessions which will be accessible to anyone with a disability within the Stewartry area.

Councillor Jeff Leaver Chair of Education and Learning Committee said “What an exciting time for curling in the Stewartry area. I congratulate the Active Schools team and the partnership and look forward to watching them work together to bring a terrific curling programme that can only benefit children and young people in this area.”
Councillor Ros Surtees Vice Chair of Education and Learning Committee said “This is fantastic news and a great opportunity. It’s come at the right time with the focus and attention on such a wonderful sport. We all know the positive link between sport and health and wellbeing, so I’m pleased to hear of the planned programme and indeed the creation of accessible Floor Curling sessions. Well done to all involved.”
