Galloway Cricket Club Lose Out To Titwood at Gatehouse

Galloway CC versus Titwood (Clydesdale CC Two’s) Gatehouse Cricket Ground – Saturday 1st July 2023

Galloway CC firsts, sponsored by Galloway Lodge, hosted visitors Titwood – the Second team of Clydesdale CC – at glorious Gatehouse on Saturday.

We are grateful to Match Sponsors Scottish Photography Hides for their support in this match.

Titwood arrived with a strong eleven, befitting their league position as (near) table toppers – including a side with experience and a number of national Scottish Cricket representatives – a tough ask for a determined yet sporting Galloway eleven.

From this writers perspective this was the finest bowling attack we have faced this summer – pace, electric pace, a left-arm quick and quality leg and off-spin – a real challenge.
These are the challenges one wants to face as a batter – despite the inconvenience.

The match was delayed by thirty minutes due to rain but soon the afternoon sun and warmth rose to drive away any lingering rainfall.
On a quick and honest wicket prepared by groundsman John Goodenough the Galloway innings commenced – openers Lamb and Carr facing speedy Scotland tyro Thaker (the quickest bowler we have faced this season) and the excellent left-armer Ul-Haq.
What a challenge for them – sadly the bowlers proved too good for them both, Lamb going for 5 and Carr 6.

Then the dramatic loss of Sinclair, the powerful Sudhi and Unikrishnan all for 0 ripped the heart of the Galloway innings apart.
Leaving the home side precariously placed at 21-5 – some ‘digging-in’ was the order of the day, this was not an easy task but carefully Domanic and McMenemy (P) added slowly and watchfully to the total – reaping the harvest of speedy byes and wides – to take the score along to the fifties before Domanic fell, well caught at first slip from a quick rising delivery outside off.

This brought together father and son McMenemy to the crease – again patience was the order of the day and taking runs when they become available – the score was advanced to mid seventies before McMenemy (P) was done by the off-spinner to be bowled for a innings high score of 10.
Marsay was unfortunate to be ran out – and some dogged last wicket scampering between Bradley and Thorburn brought the innings to a close at 92 – with extras being the top contributor.

Needless run outs, sloppy batting and great bowling curbing any real opportunity for the home side.

Following tea’s and a heavy shower, which delayed the restart, the visitors reply began – with openers Awan and Farid coming to the crease.
They took the offensive option and attacked the bowling with gusto – however the Galloway bowling attack stuck to their guns to limit the damage, only dropped catches (sadly) and some umpiring decisions hastened the run-chase for the visitors.
In fact all GCC bowlers can be proud of their efforts.

However another defeat for the Galloway CC team who again fought hard and carried on in a determined manner leaving the Captain Ross Lamb proud of their efforts.

GCC innings – ao 92. McMenemy (P) 10, Bradley and Domanic 8.
Titwood – 93-1. Awan 48no.

Thanks again to sponsors Galloway Lodge, match sponsors Scottish Photography Hides and Louise for scoring.
