Galloway Cricket Club is delighted to announce that is has been awarded “Scotland’s most welcoming club” by Cricket Scotland. The award is chosen by Cricket Scotland staff following their travels around the country over the last year and everyone at the club is extremely proud to have been recognised for their efforts to grow and develop the sport within the small community in recent years. The award is sponsored by Last Man Stands and the club will also receive a small financial award from Cricket Scotland.
An outstanding number of new players of all ages and backgrounds have got involved in the club this year and the positivity and friendliness amongst all members has spread far and wide. The focal point for the club this year has been the efforts to raise funds towards building a new pavilion at their beautiful ground in the Cally Woods in Gatehouse of Fleet. The club is happy to have been awarded £5,000 from Jewson as part of their recent “Building Better Communities” initiative and £40,000 from the Holywood Trust which has given the total a much-needed boost. Fundraising continues all year round with a 24 hour cricket match due to take place in September. The game has been rescheduled after being abandoned because of extreme weather in July and starts at 6pm on Friday 4th September and finishing at 6pm on Saturday 5th September. Anyone is welcome to come along and meet some members, have a wee game or just offer support to players. Donations can be made to any club member – please support these crazy cricketers who will play through the night at the flood lit ground!
The club’s end of season ceilidh and awards night is also due to take place on Saturday 12th September at the Cocoa Bean in Twynholm. Live music from Whigmaleerie and a hog roast is included in the ticket price – £15 per adult, £10 per child.
