In 2008, Scotland’s SOUTHERN UPLANDS SPORTIVE broke the mould by culminating in a 9-mile climb to the radar station at the top of Lowther Hill; the first summit finish in the UK on the highest road in Scotland. Now, after a 6-year absence, the UK’s original summit sportive is back.
On 22nd May competitors will descend on Wanlockhead – the remotest and highest ‘village depart’ on the UK calendar – to take on one of three routes; 40, 70 or 105 miles. All options include the 6 mile climb of the Dalveen Pass as well as the long haul to the summit finish. In addition, the Full Radar also features the Devil’s Beeftub above Moffat and the fearsome 20% slopes of the iconic Wall of Talla.
Organiser Peter Smith said; “The road up to the working radar station at the summit of Lowther Hill is usually closed to traffic. But with the kind co-operation of Buccleuch Estates, Hopetoun Estates and NATS, competitors will be able to experience one of the few summit finishes on the UK sportive scene. It is a spectacular setting for a truly memorable day’s riding”
