GREAT DAY OF WOMENS CRICKET DURING BANK HOLIDAY AT GALLOWAY CRICKET CLUB

A great day of women’s cricket took place at Galloway Cricket Club on Sunday 24th May when three teams – Stirling, Ayr and Galloway – met to play a 30-over a-side game.
Stirling-Ayr won the toss and chose to field first, so Galloway’s Ginger Ramsay and Pavlina Van Rooyen padded up and got the home side off to a steady start until Ginger was clean bowled by Fi for 7. Dawn Campbell joined Pavlina but only for a short time before being caught and bowled by Gill from Ayr for one. Louise Cumbley also didn’t last long, being controversially put out LBW for only 2. Following several wickets in quick succession Galloway dug in and Pavlina and Natalie Hamblin put on a terrific partnership – some might say there was quite a bit of luck involved with the pair being nicknamed “Teflon” after surviving several close calls. Pavlina retired at 23 following an injury to her knee and Natalie was joined by young Orla Montgomery (10) who gave the fielding team a run around and impressed everyone with her technique and speedy running! Orla was run out for 6 and Laura Scobie (Castle Douglas High School) joined Natalie for a brief spell before being bowled by Under 17 Scotland player, Ellen Watson for only one run. Another pupil from CDHS then batted for the first time for Galloway Ladies in a hardball game – Alex Livingstone. Natalie was soon run out for 21 and Kathleen Hamblin quickly followed being put out LBW also off the bowling of Ellen Watson for none. Alex and Sam were then left to finish things off ending on 2 and one respectively.
Galloway scored 110 for 8 off 30 overs.
After a break for tea Stirling-Ayr kicked things off again with Sarah and Amanda keeping the Galloway side on their toes until Tegan Line ran Amanda out for 11. Georgie then joined Sarah at the crease and the pair managed an impressive partnership before Sarah was caught by Pavlina Van Rooyen in an epic jump and roll for 38. Ellen Watson joined Georgie and saw the visitors to a victory after 21 overs. The game continued however as the remaining overs were played out for fun.
Stirling-Ayr finished on 111 for 2 off 21 overs.
Galloway’s bowling was what let them down in this fixture with the poor scorer running out of space to record all their wides! The team put in a great effort however and managed to keep pressure on the visiting team and left the pitch feeling happy with their performance overall. Pavlina Van Rooyen was named Galloway’s player of the match after her impressive performance with the bat as well as her gutsy fielding – diving all over, stopping runs and taking an amazing catch!
The ladies had a great day and are looking forward to the season ahead! If you are interested in joining the team please get in touch with Natalie on 07872 909 010 – we welcome women and girls of all ages and experiences!
