The 2019 Tour of Britain comes peddling into Kirkcudbright on Saturday 7 September. Last week, Tour of Britain mascot Tobi was in the artist’s town to get people in the mood for the big day. He chained his bike up and headed to local sports clubs in Kirkcudbright to spread the word that the Tour is coming.
Up to 9,000 are expected in Kirkcudbright on Saturday 7 September as the town hosts the Stage One finish of the 2019 OVO Energy Tour of Britain. The stage will begin in Glasgow on the Saturday morning before winding its way down country, through Glasgow, into parts of Ayrshire and then into Dumfries and Galloway. Riders will take in the corners and undulation of the Solway coast before sprinting over the line in Kirkcudbright.
Tobi visited St Cuthbert Wanderers, where he met took his turn in goals before heading off to Kirkcudbright Tennis Club. He was made very welcome there by the Ladies Section, who invited him into their game of doubles.
From there, Tobi swapped his tennis balls for his golf balls as he hit some drives with the Lady Captain of Kirkcudbright Golf Club and holed some putts on the 18th green with a few of the members. Tobi rounded off his day in the town by managing a couple of ends at Kirkcudbright Bowling Club.
After a day or so to rest up he took the weight off his feet and watched The Kirkcudbright Tattoo and was available for photos in the Parish Church, where there’s a “Chain Reaction” cycling exhibition on, inspired by local people.
One person who was delighted to see Tobi in the town was our Council’s Events Champion, Councillor Adam Wilson.
Councillor Adam Wilson said,
“The Tour of Britain has a long-standing and healthy relationship with Dumfries and Galloway. It is one of our signature events that we fund. I hope to see many thousands of people in Kirkcudbright to watch the world class cyclists finish the first stage of the Tour next week. I am glad to see Tobi has made a few friends at the local sports clubs and it is obviously marvellous to have the clubs on board with what will be a fantastic day of world class sports taking place on St Mary’s Street.”
