Nunholm Lose In Close Derby Finish With Galloway – Cricket News

In the West Premier League on Saturday Your Move Dumfries lost out to league leaders Prestwick and the second team, Nunholm, had a close derby defeat to Galloway in the Second Division.

At Prestwick it was a contrast in starts for the two teams. Batting first the home team top order succeeded in setting a platform for a big total. The openers put on a century together but Dumfries did peg them pack with Chris Brockwell removing both in quick succession, Singh for the innings top score of 74. Brockwell then got his third and Jesse Smit bowled another with Prestwick 148 for 4 in the 33rd over.

However a crucial partnership between overseas South Africans Van Dyk and Du Randt effectively took the game away from Dumfries. Both got fifties as Prestwick surged to a final total of 273 for 8. In the closing overs Tommy McGrath fought back to claim two wickets and Smit ended with three.

Last week’s century partnership did not repeat with Dumfries rapidly three wickets down and not in double figures. Walker and Sharpe Player of the Match Smit provided resistance but fell one short of his fifty. It required a late innings stand from Ronan Dunbar with 30 and Andy Reed 29 not out to reach bonus point territory as Dumfries ended 169 all out.

In the West Second Division Nunholm hosted Galloway in a local derby encounter. The Gatehouse side batted first and they succeeded in setting a challenging total of 245 for 6 with Steven Carr hitting 61, Ross Lamb 50, and Pat Druce contributed 35. Wickets were shared with Matt Pickstock picking up a caught and bowled on his debut.

Nunholm managed a century start thanks to openers Mat Williams and Sam Thornely. Thornely was out for 45 and Max Corbett-Byers then boosted the run rate as he hit a rapid 39. Number seven Callum Reynolds-Lewis also provided impetus with 27 not out but Nunholm started to rue missed opportunities when they finished ten runs short of a dramatic win on 236 for 5. Walker and Sharpe Player of the Match Mat Williams finished undefeated on 73 not out.

Women’s Cricket: In the Premier League Scotland all-rounder Abbi Aitken-Drummond was too good for the combined Dumfries CC, Galloway CC side at Gatehouse against Carlton. She took two early wickets and although the local side were 59 for 2 the subsequent departure of opener Lorna Jack caught for the top score of 39 saw a final total of 79 all out. Abbi Aitken-Drummond was instrumental in the chase as well opening with 25 before being caught and bowled by Jack, who was the Ashleigh Building Player of the Match for the team. Scotland’s Charis Scott hit 35 not out as Carlton won by nine wickets.

Junior Cricket: The Dumfries Under-11s lost to an impressive Lanercost side in the league on Sunday morning. Lanercost had a net score of 276 for the loss of only one wicket. That made a difference as Dumfries managed 239 for 6 in reply. On their debuts Lleyton Endredy and Cameron Jones bowled well in tandem and Cameron hit the stumps for the only wicket and for the James Hallam Coach’s Highlight of the Day.

This Saturday, fifth placed Your Move Dumfries are at home at Nunholm against third placed West of Scotland in the West Premier League with the match starting at noon.
