Children from primary schools across Dumfries and Galloway travelled to Dumfries College on wednesday to compete in the Dumfries and Galloway Primary Schools Regional Sportshall Athletics Finals.
Eight schools assembled teams totalling nearly 250 children to take part in the regional final which is an exciting indoor programme of adapted athletics activities with the winner progressing to the West of Scotland Regional Finals. Primary schools taking part who had qualified from area events and trials included Newington from Annan, Moffat, Heathhall and Georgetown from Dumfries, Gatehouse, Kirkcudbright, Penninghame from Newton Stewart and Sheuchan Primary School from Stranraer.
The event which is part of the Primary Schools PEPAS sporting calendar across the region saw children take part in numerous track events including short and middle distance, relay races, obstacle relay and field events including standing long jump, vertical jump and the speed bounce. The event was supported by students from sporting coaching courses at the college.
After a full morning of exciting competition the team who scored the most points would progress to the West of Scotland Regional Final in Linwood on the 23rd February. Presentations were made by Councillor Jeff Leaver, Chair of the Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning Committee to Moffat Primary School who came first with 175 points followed Newington Primary School with 168 points. Penninghame Primary School from Newton Stewart came third with 112 points with Heathhall Primary School finishing 4th with 103 points.
Councillor Jeff Leaver said, “This regional final was preceded by area qualifying events and trials that give all schools the opportunity to experience the exciting sport of Sportshall Athletics. It is great to see so many children competing not just today but also the many children that experienced the activity leading up to this event. Providing the best start in life for all our children and supporting children to be healthy and active are priorities for Dumfries and Galloway Council and this event is certainly achieving that.” He also congratulated all schools for their efforts and gave best wishes to Moffat Primary School when they travel to Linwood in four weeks’ time.”
He also thanked Dumfries College for hosting the event and the students from the college who helped deliver the track and field events on the day and make the event possible.
