Queen of the South Ladies took on Annan Athletic on Sunday at Palmerston in the 1st round of the League Cup.
Annan were unable to field a full team and played throughout with only ten players. Queens dominated the match throughout and opened the scoring after 4 minutes when Megan Masterton beat 3 Annan players and rifled the ball into the far corner. Megan doubled Queens’ lead a few minutes later when Cairn Houliston squared to her inside the box. Queens grabbed a third on 12 minutes when Kirsty McDonald raced on to a pass down the right and fired an unstoppable shot into the net at the keeper’s near post. Megan completed her hat trick on 17 minutes with a cool finish from an acute angle. Megan was in unstoppable form and scored her fourth and Queens’ fifth on 25 minutes, chipping the ball over the keeper and in at the far post, leaving the keeper with no chance. Megan’s scoring streak was interrupted by Browyn Davies hitting a powerful drive in off the underside of the bar. Megan completed the first half scoring with another chip shot, bringing the score to 7-0 to Queens at half time.
The second half was more of the same with Queens looking to move the ball around quickly, with neat inter-passing all over the pitch. Megan continued as she had started with a goal in the 47th minute, and just a minute later left back Tara Keast grabbed her first goal for Queens with a left footed drive after good running down the left. Megan scored another superb strike on 60 minutes. Queens weren’t finished and after 83 minutes Holly Ovens shot home after a good build up down Queens’ right hand side ended with a cross ball finding Holly on the left hand side of the area. Within a minute Megan Murray shot home from just inside the box to make it a round dozen for Queens. Queens rounded off the scoring on 87 minutes with Lindsey Broadfoot bundling the ball over the line from close range. It was great to see Megan and Lindsey getting their first goals since returning to the club. A good debut from Brodie Caven who partnered Charlotte Smith in a central defence which never put a foot wrong all day. Annan tried hard but with only ten players they were up against it from the start, but despite that they gave everything they had for the 90 minutes.
