Queen of the South Ladies remain in 4th place in the Barclays Scottish Women’s League One following a surprise home defeat against Airdrie Ladies on Sunday.
Airdrie started the game at a furious pace and Queens had their work cut out to match them. Airdrie took the lead after 15 minutes, but Queens fought back, equalising a powerful strike into the top corner from midfielder Eck Connon in the 33rd minute. However the parity didn’t last long as Airdrie snatched a second goal just 4 minutes later to go in leading 2-1 at half time.
Queens started the second half putting Airdrie under pressure, and with only 2 minutes gone a Freya Brown corner from the left found its way to Holly Ovens who nodded the ball into the far corner of the net. Queens seemed to have a new lease of life and kept pressure on the Airdrie defence, but without taking any of the many chances they created. Left back Maisie Copland repeatedly ran at the Airdrie defence to supply the ammunition but Queens weren’t getting the brakes and as the game neared the final few minutes it looked as if Queens would have to settle for a draw. Sadly even that was snatched from them when a breakaway led to a race between Charlotte Smith and an Airdrie attacked and although Smith managed to get in a tackle the Airdrie striker managed to roll it into the net to snatch the three points for the Diamonds.
This Sunday Queens travel to Armadale Thistle for the final pre-split game knowing that they can only fall to fifth if they lose to Armadale Thistle and St Mirren beat Airdrie.
