Queen of the South ladies travelled down to Lockerbie on Sunday to played their first league of the season in a local derby against Mid Annandale ladies.
Both teams started the game at a slow pace with Queens having plenty of the ball but it was Mids who scored the opener direct from a corner kick on the 10th minute. Queens didn’t panic and continued to play some neat passing football looking for an equaliser. They were rewarded on 16 minutes when Queens won a free kick 25 yards from goal and Siobhan Hodgson stepped up to curl the ball over wall into the corner of the net.
Queens immediately grew in confidence and a few minutes later Holly Ovens was fouled in the box and she dusted herself down to slot the ball into the corner from the penalty spot. Queens were now controlling the tempo of the game with Bronwyn and Sonya breaking up Mids play in the middle of the park and Siobhan and Chloe tidying up anything over the top. Queens grabbed a crucial third goal on 36 minutes when Megan Mastertons looping shot from range dropped into the net. HT 1-3.
Queens started the second half well but knew the next goal was important. This came in the 58th minute when the mids keeper saved Megan’s long range effort but Holly was in the right place to fire home the rebound. Queens were now playing some great football and Megan added to the goal tally on 64 minutes with a fine strike and Holly grabbed her hat trick a few minutes later cutting in from the right and firing into the opposite top corner. Megan then grabbed her hat trick on 82 minutes after some nice build up play. Eve went close with another effort after cutting in from the left and Megan rounded off the scoring with another great strike from distance on 86 minutes.
FT 1-8
Coaches were delighted to secure the three points on the opening day of the season and with the performances of everyone in the squad. Thanks to Mid Annandale ladies for the game and we wish them well for the coming season.
