Queen of the South Ladies steamrollered Inverurie Loco Works Ladies on Sunday in a highly entertaining Barclays SWFL League one fixture at Palmerston.
Injuries meant that the Queens back line had to be changed with Maisie Copland filling in at centreback, with her younger sister Skye taking the left back position, and there was also a starting place for the impressive Eve Crombie.
Queens took an early lead when Alexandra Connon controlled a loose ball and shot home from close range, but the lead was short lives as the visitors broke away and despite a good block from Queens keeper Eve Jackson the rebound was forced into the net. The game was fairly even at this stage but Queens again took the lead when centreback Charlotte Bryden was perfectly positioned to latch on to a clearance and from 25 yards she hit a ferocious drive into the top corner. Queens added a third from Holly ovens who used her pace to outrun the defence and fire home. Locos took advantage of some hesitancy in the rearranged Queens defence and manage to score twice to level the scores at half time.
The second half started with Queens pressing and it wasn’t long before they again pulled ahead when Holly Ovens sent Eve Crombie through on goal. Eve outpaced the defence and fired a superb well placed shot across the keeper and into the net. Queens were determined not to let Locos back into the game and play was concentrated in the Locos half. Queens were pressing well down the wings and with the midfield trio of Gallagher, Carruthers & Connon dictating the play it looked as if more goals were likely. The next goal duly arrived when Charlotte Bryden got her head to a corner from Freya Brown. Next it was Holly Ovens who latched on to a through ball to fire in Queens’ 6th, and the game was rounded off with another Charlotte Bryden header in the 78th minute.
Final score Queens 7 Inverurie Loco Works 3 and Queens currently sitting in third place in the league.
Queens Ladies don’t have a game this weekend. Next game is a Scottish Cup tie against Dundee West Ladies on 6th October.
