Queens Ladies had to dig deep to overcome Giffnock Ladies at Palmerston on Sunday. In a fiercely contested physical game, bottom side Giffnock fought desperately, knowing that their League 1 status was in grave danger.
Queens had the upper hand in the first half but poor finishing prevented them from getting their noses in front, and the visitors shocked Queens shoertly before half time when they took the lead with an excellent shot that looped over Queens’ keeper Lois Kerr and dropped into the far corner of the goal. However Giffnock’s lead didn’t last long as within seconds top scorer Charlotte Bryden got her head to a corner kick to score the equaliser. However Giffnock struck again when a defensive misunderstanding was pounced upon by the Giffnock striker who rolled the ball into the net. Half time 2-1 to Giffnock.
Queens came out in the second half desperate to get control of the game but there was a further shock when a giffnock attacked broke clear and outpaced the defence to grab a third goal for the visitors. 3-1 down, and things looked ominous for Queens, but they pulled a goal back when Lois Geddes beat the keeper to the ball and bundled the ball home, the referee ignoring Giffnock assertions that the keeper had been fouled. Queens had stepped things up a gear and they drew level when Eve Jackson picked the ball up wide on the right and worked her way ito the area before placing a beautifully weighted ball across the goal to Holly Ovens who scored from close range right at the post. With time running out, Queens took the three points when Charlotte Bryden again got her head to the ball and from close range the ball ended up in the net. An amazing turnaround from Queens and although they didn’t play well by their usual standard, they certainly never gave up. Queens moved up to third in the table and are now in a strong position to have a chance of winning the title, a situation that only recently looked very unlikely.
This Sunday Queens are at Inverurie, some distance north of Aberdeen, to take on Inverurie Loco Works Ladies. Insert your own train jokes here…
