Dumfries and Galloway will be cheering on local College (DGC)student Niamh Muir as she leads Scotland’s Women Under-19s cricketers at the T20 World Cup in Malaysia (Jan 18-Feb 2).
Niamh, a dedicated and talented athlete, has shown exceptional leadership and skill on and off the pitch. Her role as captain is a testament to her hard work, determination and passion for the sport.
The T20 World Cup presents an incredible opportunity for Niamh and her team-mates to showcase their talents on a global stage. The college community will be supporting Niamh and the entire Scotland squad as they compete against some of the best young cricketers in the world.
The 19-year-old business student’s talents with the bat were recognised at an early age and she soon began playing club cricket, regional matches and then on to Scotland U15s and now the U19s, where she was given the role of skipper to guide her country to the World Cup.
Niamh Muir told BBC Scotland: “I captained the qualifiers, and it was something new for me. I’d never done it before but the coaches thought I’d be a good match for it.
“Obviously going to the World Cup is going to be quite a big step ─ it’ll be good for us. We’ve always got a want-to-win attitude and have a strong squad this year.”
Joanna Campbell, Principal and CEO, Dumfries and Galloway College, said: “We are incredibly proud of Niamh and her outstanding accomplishment as captain of Scotland’s Women Under-19s.
“Her dedication and drive are truly inspiring, and we know she will lead her team with great skill and determination.
“As Niamh prepares to represent Scotland in Malaysia, her success highlights the importance of balancing academic and athletic pursuits. Dumfries and Galloway College remains committed to supporting students in achieving their dreams, whether in the classroom, on the field, or beyond.”
