Saints Walking Football competed at national level last week, in the Over 65’s section of the Glasgow Trophy run by Glasgow Life at Toryglen Regional Football Centre.
Group stage competition was tough this time, with strong teams entered by Drumchapel, Dundee East and Carrick. Eastleigh Spitfires had travelled all the way from Southampton to participate, and did very well. Lintlithgow Rose and Saints completed the group of six.
Captained by Ian McIntyre, Saints started with a squad reduced by injury and suffered a 0-3 loss to Eastleigh Spitfires in the opening game, but showed resilience by bouncing back to draw 1-1 with Dundee East (who came out group winners) and then beat Linlithgow Rose 1-0. Unfortunately losses followed to Carrick 0-2 and Drumchapel 0-1, and this wasn’t enough to qualify for the quarter finals. Drumchapel came in second place in the group stage.
Ian said, “We had a great day. We’re getting stronger in competing at national level, and we didn’t feel out of place here today. I’m confident we’ll come back stronger next time, especially if we can field a full squad”.
Saints’ Cindy Halliday deserves a special call-out as the only female player in the entire tournament. Cindy is a qualified fitness coach and an experienced footballer. Both qualities were on show throughout the day.
