The Stewartry Men’s 1XV rounded off the 2024/25 season in style with an impressive 22-3 win over Ardrossan at Greenlaw.
In most likely the worst playing conditions of the whole campaign, Stewartry came flying out of the blocks at the start of the game and were on the scoreboard just two minutes in after Thomas McLean charged down a box kick and went in under the posts.
With the away side struggling to get a foothold in the game and make their passes stick, the Blacks piled on the pressure and got their second of the game through number eight Christ Root, picking off the back of the scrum and powering his way over to extend the lead.
Ardrossan managed a penalty late on in the second half to get their only points of the game as Stewartry took a 12-3 lead going into the break.
The second half started much the same way as the first, with David Thomson’s side the one to retain possession of the ball and play in the right areas.
Stewartry’s patience was further rewarded with two more tries to secure the bonus point win. The first half saw two forwards score for Stewartry and in the second half two backs.
The first came from winger Finlay Smith out in the far corner of the pitch after some good hands in tricky weather from the backline.
Lochy Spence then dived over from a few metres out to wrap up the win over second-placed Ardrossan and end the season on a high.
For the first time in a few seasons, Stewartry have finished the season in March and can now enjoy a longer rest before attention turns to pre-season and a team trip to Blackpool.
