STEWARTRY 21 WAYSIDERS DRUMPELLIER 19
Stewartry were away to Coatbridge to take on Waysiders Drumpellier in the BT West League Division.
The home side kicked off and in 2 minutes Stewartry gave away a penalty on their own 22 for going into the ruck from the side. The kick went wide of the posts.
Waysiders made it into the Stewartry 22 for a lineout but the ball was knocked on. At the scrum the home pack pushed forward and were given another scrum 10 metres from the Blacks line. Waysiders kept the pressure on but Boyd managed a steal and put the ball to Mosey who kicked back down field.
With 8 minutes gone Stewartry gave away a penalty for not releasing the ball giving the home side a 5 metre lineout. Their forwards secured the ball and drove over to touch down behind the try line. The conversion went wide.
From the restart it was Waysiders who were penalised for not releasing giving Stewartry a lineout on the home 22. The Blacks took clean ball with Smith running on to it at pace but he was stopped 10 metres short. Home defenders managed a turnover to clear the ball away.
At the midway point of the first period both teams had a man yellow carded after one of the home players committed foul play.
The Blacks took the ball in a lineout and sent it to Carson who charged up the right wing but he was tackled short of the try line.
After 23 minutes Stewartry got a penalty12 metres from the home line when Waysiders went over the top of a ruck, Mosey’s kick went between the uprights taking 3 points.
On the half hour with both sides back to full strength the Blacks got a scrum on the halfway line on the left side of the pitch. The ball went to John Kerr who got up into the home 22. McCarney was on his shoulder to take the ball. He ran through 3 defence tackles to score a try. Mosey added the conversion to give Stewartry a 5 point cushion.
The home team got a scrum on the Blacks 10 metre line but Stewartry took the ball against the head and got deep into home 22 but got stopped. The Blacks gave away a penalty for not releasing allowing Waysiders to clear their lines.
In the lineout the home forwards secured the ball and tried to drive up to the Stewartry line but tight defence got a turnover to send the ball back down field on the stroke of half time.
The second period got off to the same start as the first. This time Waysiders gave away a penalty for offside followed by another when they were not back 10 metres.
Securing good possession at the lineout the ball went out to Danny Boyd who got over the home line but the ball was held up. Stewartry took the ball in the 5 metre scrum but knocked on in front of the home posts. In another scrum the Blacks pack was penalised for pushing too early wasting a good scoring chance and allowing Waysiders to clear their line.
With eight minutes gone David Kerr replaced his brother Andrew. From a lineout outside the home 22 David Kerr ran onto the ball at speed breaking up the right wing. Good support from Carson saw him go in for a try. The conversion went wide.
Cammy Fenwick replaced Smith when he left the field with an ankle injury. Stewartry got two more penalties taking them to a lineout 5 metres from the home line. A long throw in went to Cammy Fenwick and he made for the line but could not touch down.
At the ruck home players went in from the side giving the Blacks a penalty. Going for a lineout the Stewartry forwards could not secure possession allowing Waysiders to clear their lines.
Stevie McCulloch was replaced by McMorrin and into the last quarter the home side was penalised for a high tackle. Mosey kicked from 27 metres out to add 3 points onto the board.
On their own 22 Stewartry went into a ruck from the side giving Waysiders a penalty and a 5 metre lineout. They caught the ball and drove in for a converted try.
With 15 minutes left Waysiders were penalised for not releasing on their 10 metre line. The kick was just wide of the posts.
A couple of minutes later the home side went offside on the same spot. Mosey did not miss a second time adding 3 more points.
Ten munites from time Thomson went on in place of Farquhar. The Blacks gave away a penalty for offside on their own 22. Waysiders went for a 5 metre lineout but the ball went dead giving Stewartry a 22 drop out.
Waysiders kept up the pressure attacking up the middle but Danny Boyd was there with a try saving tackle. Sainsbury replaced John Kerr 7 minutes from time.
In a lineout 10 metres from the Blacks line the throw in was not straight giving Waysiders a scrum. They got the push on driving over the Stewatry line for a try and adding the conversion.
The restart kick went straight out. Stewartry went on the attack getting deep into the home 22 but they couldn’t get over the try line.
In the last couple of minutes again Stewartry went into a ruck from the side on their own 10 metre line giving away a penalty. In spite of moving the ball a metre nearer the posts the Waysider kick went wide leaving the final score at 21 – 19 to Stewartry.
This was a spirited and improved performance by Stewartry particularly in the set piece. From the start of the game the big home pack tried to put pressure on the Blacks pack but they were more than a match for them.
