Stewartry RFC Top Of The Table After Record First League Game Score

After the first Tennents West One league game Stewartry went top of the table after a record first league game score at Greenlaw on Saturday, beating Cambuslang 52-5 beating the previous 50-5 back in 2008 against Hillfoots.

Stewartry started briskly with Boyd and A Picken play deep into the Cambuslang 22 and were quickly awarded a penalty which captain John Picken slotted over from in front of the posts.

Time one minute.

Seven minutes later Stewartry had increased their lead with an opening try from David Steele.

J Picken added the conversion. 10-0.

Two minutes later Jason Forsyth added a second try with Picken again adding the points. 17-0 and only ten minutes gone. John Muir was next to show on the wing being stopped ten metres short.

A yellow card for one of the Cambuslang forwards for too many penalties and back chat to the referee fired them up and the fourteen men scored out in the corner. 17-5 after twenty minutes.

Thirty four minutes and John Muir came in off the wing for the third try. J Picken converted again.

Thirty six Minutes and some nifty passing skills from prop McMorran gave Steven Hogg the fourth bonus point try.

Steven Hogg and Danny Boyd put stand off Robert Austin in for the fifth try. Picken’s conversion brought up the half time whistle 38-5 Stewartry.

The first highlight of the second half was replacement Stewartry debut winger Merlin Lawrence taking hold of the ball for the first time and out stripping the Cambuslang defence for a first ever try for the youngster. Captain John Picken again added the points.45-5

Both teams made numerous changes and there were not so many scoring chances in the last fifteen minutes until an exciting ten man passing move from the Blacks made the captains day when he scored the seventh try and then added the points for the record win by two points.

The game finished with veteran Danny Boyd chipping to touch in the corner as he completed his 300th game for the club since his debut back in 2000. Full time 52-5 Stewartry.

 

This week Stewartry are away to Annan in their local derby in the preliminary round of the West Regional Shield kick off 3.00pm.

 

On Sunday Stewartry Sirens scored twelve tries at home to Glasgow University Women winning 76 -10 to top the Tennent’s National Women’s League after three games.

 

This weekend Stewartry Sirens travel to Inverurie North of Aberdeen to play second placed Garioch with a 2.00pm kick off.
