Stewartry Under 16’s – 50 v 0 Ardrossan Under 16’s
Ardrossan arrived short in numbers so Stewartry were forced to drop players and play a faster paced 10 a side game. However Stewartry’s fitness showed and they ran in 8 tries with 7 converted before half time.
Ball was moved quickly wide allowing Captain Joseph Strain to score a very early first. Archie Holman and Ryan Cochrane showed great strength running through the middle of the field at every opportunity with Holman making some great tackles and scoring a fine try. James Caygill, playing some great direct rugby this year showed the opposition a clean pair of heels twice to score two fine try’s by running up through the centre of the field. Finlay Smith scored a great try from his own half from a good sidestep and strong break. Further tries by Matthew Coupland and Lochlann Spence completed the scoring.
The second half of the game was a development phase, with Stewartry giving Ardrossan their three strongest players. However the remaining Stewartry players stepped up to the mark and still managed to win by a good margin. Tries of the day were from a very well placed Matthew Coupland kick through for Archie Nicholson to pick up and run in from half way and from a powerful solo effort by Glen Duke handing off four players on the way to the try line.
All in all a good solid performance from Stewartry to stay top of the West Under 16 (South) League, and many thanks to Ardrossan who despite being short on numbers, still fulfilled the fixture, and ensured that 25 boys got a good game off rugby on a sunny day.
Great to see the returning players Glen Duke and Fraser Forsyth playing so well and settling back into the team, and Connor McGuire who had a solid game back from injury. Man of the match this week was the outstanding Fraser Forsyth who showed great strength, speed and ball handling.
