Sunny Greenlaw enjoyed a ten try cracker on Saturday with Stewartry winning their first league game of the season scoring six converted tries to Cumnocks unconverted four tries Stewartry’s Craig Mosey kicking the six conversions and also a penalty for the Blacks helping make the difference between the teams.
STEWARTRY RFC 45pts CUMNOCK RFC 20pts
Stewartry missed an early penalty chance before Cumnock went ahead in ten minutes with some slick passing to score out on the right. the conversion missed. Two minutes later Stewartry were in the lead for the first time this season in the league John Muir breaking through down the right wing. Craig Mosey converted his first of the day.7-5 Blacks.
Twenty minutes and a scrum driven towards the posts by Cumnock win the ball and spin it wide for a second unconverted try. 7-10 Cumnock.
Stewartry retained the lead just before half time when John Picken scored between the posts and Mosey added the points 14-10 Blacks.
Within three minutes of the restart Cumnock with only fourteen fit men on the pitch scored a third try wide out on the left to regain a narrow one point lead. 14-15 Cumnock.
Stewartry took play back to the Cumnock 22 winning a penalty advantage which saw Mosey chip over from in front of the posts. 17-15 Blacks.
Fifty three minutes and Stewartry started to stretch ahead as Mathew Taylor scored the Blacks fourth bonus point try and Mosey added the points 24-15 Blacks. Stewartry had two more tries disallowed by Underwood and Taylor before Taylor again found the Cumnock defence open right up for his second try of the day. Mosey stepped up and converted. 31-15 Blacks.
Andy Wilson who was playing his first game for the Blacks for a number of years came on to the wing to cause havoc in the Cumnock tiring defence setting scrum half John Picken in for his second try. Mosey converted. 38-15. Blacks.
With under ten minutes left Wilson was rewarded with his own try centre David Kerr making space through the middle for an easy score again at the posts.
Cumnock although beaten never gave up and battled hard to gain the fourth bonus point try which might prove vital come the end of the season for the newly promoted team as both teams battle to stay in Tennents West Division One. Full time 45-20 Stewartry.
