A fantastic crowd turned out on a warm day great for watching rugby, but testing to play in on Sundays the 15th of May, when Stewartry Rugby Club held their annual Under 13s and Under 14’s Rugby sevens competition at Greenlaw, Castle Douglas with teams from Annan, Dumfries, Marr and Newton Stewart joining the hosts Stewartry for a round robin competition.
U13 team
This was a solid team performance from all boys involved, backed up by lots of determination and individual flare resulting in the boys going undefeated all afternoon and hitting their own objective before hand of not letting opposition score any points.
Most pleasing aspect was that all boys took up challenge and substitutions made no impact on team performance with the less experienced boys in team really finding form, being assisted by the regular big hitters to produce lots of try’s for watching supporters.
On a day when it was all about the boys realising it’s about team performance, rather than who scores try’s going to credit all Stewartry twenty two try’s to the Team on this occasion.
Well done all.
Scores ( 5 points try, 2 points drop goal )
Stewartry 37-0 Marr
Stewartry. 55-0 Dumfries
Stewartry. 34-0 Annan
This was followed by a fun 13 aside game where all players were mixed together to give the boys more game time and chance to combine with other players which was enjoyed by all.
Under 14 Trophy Winners ‘Marr’
U14 Team
Stewartry Under 14 V Marr
The game started off very fast with Marr scoring a try quickly from a break away. The boys kept plugging away with the tackling but Marr soon score another couple of tries. The defence was very good with some great last ditch try saving tackles. A change of personnel near the end changed things with Stewartry driving forward and breaking away for the try by Fraser Forsyth. A couple of unforced errors (dropped passes) prevented other scores before the end. Marr were deserved winner as they tackled and off loaded very well.
Stewartry Under 14 V Dumfries
The boys started off like a train scoring 3 tries very quickly by being positive and aggressive going forward. The Dumfries team fought back pretty well scoring at half time. However, the Stewartry picked up and kept the momentum going scoring another couple off tries near the end. Very good going forward with positive running and strong tackling performance.
Stewartry Under 14 V Newton Stewart
The Stewartry started with most of the earlier players being rested. They tackled ferociously (very pleasing) and made a couple of good breaks by Pacey Ho who ran in 2 tries. A try was conceded before the break which was very much merited by Newton Stewart. A couple of changes in the backs saw several more tries scored by Stewartry who ran out easy winners in the end. However, fair play to Newton Stewart whose heads never dropped and they tackled like dervishes all the way to the end.
All in All a very satisfying performance although the came up against very slick and well drilled team in Marr College who throughly deserved the trophy. Lots of positives to work on for the Under 14 team.
