Women’s Indoor Cricket Tournament in Dumfries – Sunday 15th January 2017

Galloway Ladies were once again successful in a hard fought indoor tournament involving two Galloway teams, Stirling and a depleted Dumfries team. A good standard of cricket was played throughout the tournament, although all teams were noticeably rusty, largely down to the lack of cricket over the festive period. Galloway Kites, led by Natalie Hamblin were focused and looked strong, going on to win all three of their fixtures with relative ease. Skipper Natalie led the way with a solid all round display with both bat and ball, and was followed up by an impressive bowling display by Orla Montgomery who was once again very economical. However, it was a committed team display by all members which resulted with a place in the final that would see them come up against Dumfries.

Galloway Eagles, led by Louise Cumbley, were sadly less successful, losing all three of their games, but were unlucky seeing two of their games lost in the last over. Nevertheless, it was another strong team performance, and losing all three games is not a fair reflection on how they played. Standout performer would be the impressive all round skills of Jessica McCulloch who shone with bat and ball despite playing with an injury. Tessa Hall also proved that her commitment to training has paid off with lots of great work in the field although she was very unlucky with the bat on this occasion. Dawn Campbell was looking confident and raring to go as she played for the Dumfries side as well as alongside her Galloway teammates. Her assertive calling and accurate fielding kept the pressure on throughout all matches. Kate Maxwell’s experience and skill shone as she tried to push the team towards a victory, however the matches were extremely close and unfortunately the team didn’t manage to secure a win.

The final between Galloway Kites and Dumfries was to be a high scoring affair, where Galloway would be victorious by 5 runs scoring 48 runs to Dumfries’ 43 in 5 overs. A solid opening partnership between Natalie Hamblin and Ginger Ramsay set Galloway up with an impressive total to defend. Dumfries lost regular wickets due to the impressive bowling and fielding skills of Galloway, and that were to prove significant as Galloway were never in any danger of losing the game. Newcomer, Jo Williams, never once looked out of place as she helped the team maintain their record without loss. Catriona Scobie took a nasty hit to the face while fielding without fear – she should be commended for her commitment skills on the field. Daughter, Laura Scobie, also showed that her recent training with the regional development squad is paying off as she looked calm and confident both with bat and ball. The Galloway ladies look forward to their next indoor tournament, due to take place in Dollar on the 12th of February, where they will be keen to put on another successful display.
