Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are undertaking essential road resurfacing on the A701 between Gates Factory and Tinwald Downs Roundabout between Monday 12th December and Wednesday 21st December 2022, between the hours of 8pm and 6am, each weeknight.
This scheme will benefit around 20,300 vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.
The work will be carried out using overnight road closures and a signed diversion will be in place.
Work will take place as follows:
- PHASE 1: 8pm-6am, each night, from Monday 12th December until Friday 16th December 2022.
The A701 will be closed between Lochthorn Medical Centre and the Tinwald Downs Roundabout, including a closure of the Kirkton Junction. The roundabout will remain open to traffic between the A701 towards and from Dumfries and Heathhall (Tinwald Downs Road). There will be no vehicular access to the petrol station during this phase of overnight closures and Kirkton traffic will need to use an alternative route. Footpaths will remain open and the pedestrian crossing within the closure area will be relocated north of the works during each overnight period. Traffic management for Phase 1 will be removed by 6am on Saturday 17th December 2022. - PHASE 2: 8pm-6am, each night, on Monday 19th December and Tuesday 20th December 2022.
This work will involve a full closure of the Tinwald Downs Roundabout, however access between Heathhall and the A701 towards and from Dumfries will be maintained via the residential link road adjacent to the roundabout and temporary traffic lights will be in place. Traffic management for Phase 2 will be removed by 6am on Wednesday 21st December 2022.
During the A701 closures, traffic will be diverted as follows: northbound traffic will take the A75 east to join the A709 eastbound at Brownrigg Roundabout, continue to Lockerbie and turn left on to the B7076 to head north, where it will join the A701 southbound south of Beattock. Southbound traffic will head south on the A701 and turn left on to the B7076 south of Beattock, continue south to Lockerbie and turn right on to the A709 to head west to Brownrigg Roundabout, before joining the A75 westbound to reach the A701.
Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.
Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
