Lovers Walk, Dumfries Roadworks Set to Disrupt Daily Commute – Here’s What You Need to Know

Dumfries and Galloway Council has announced that roadworks will begin on Lovers Walk in Dumfries on April 28, 2025.

The work, which is expected to last approximately five days, will resurface the carriageway.

Since Lovers Walk is a major route for many in the town, these disruptions will affect daily commutes and travel.

Here’s everything you need to know from a letter sent to local residents.

What Are the Roadworks for?

The roadworks are part of a necessary upgrade to Lovers Walk, which will involve resurfacing the entire carriageway. The aim is to improve the road’s condition and ensure safer travel for all users, but it will require temporary closures and diversions.

When Will the Roadworks Take Place?

The works are scheduled to begin on the 28th of April 2025, with daily closures from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The project is expected to be completed by the 2nd of May 2025.

How Will the Roadworks Affect Traffic?

During the roadworks, there will be a daily closure of Lovers Walk, affecting both vehicle and pedestrian access. A phased approach will be taken to minimise disruption. The diversion routes for vehicles will be clearly marked:

  • A701 Academy Street

  • A780 Loreburn Street

  • A780 English Street

  • A701 Moffat Road

  • C201N Moffat Road

  • A709 St Mary’s Street

Phased Works Approach

To ensure the project progresses smoothly, the works will be carried out in phases, as follows:

  • Phase 1 (28th April): Academy Street to Newall Terrace

  • Phase 2 (29th April): Newall Terrace to Watling Street

  • Phase 3 (30th April): Watling Street to St Mary’s Street

Each phase will be completed sequentially, with resurfacing work beginning on the 29th of April and finishing by the 1st of May.

Parking Suspension Along Lovers Walk

For safety reasons, there will be a full parking suspension along the length of Lovers Walk during the works. This will ensure that the necessary machinery and equipment can be used without obstruction, and work can proceed efficiently.

Emergency Access

While the road will be closed to regular traffic, emergency services will still have access through alternative routes, ensuring there is no delay in response times in case of emergencies.

Resident Access During Roadworks

While the roadworks will cause temporary closures on Lovers Walk, the council has assured residents that alternative access will be provided during the works. Although normal routes may be blocked, residents will still be able to reach their homes via designated alternative paths. The exact details of these arrangements can be obtained by contacting the council directly.

Contractor and Contact Information

The works will be carried out by McGeady’s, and the council has requested the patience and understanding of the public during this time.

Local residents are encouraged to direct any questions or concerns to 030 33 33 3000 or by emailing RoadNetworkGeneralEnquiries-East@dumgal.gov.uk.

Understanding the Inconvenience

The council has acknowledged that the roadworks will cause disruption, particularly given the importance of Lovers Walk as a key route in Dumfries. However, they have assured residents that every effort will be made to complete the works as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimise the impact on daily routines.
