Round Up Of Works On The M6 – Cumbria/North Lancashire Monday 17 To Sunday 23 August

Roadworks affect all journeys which is why it is important they are completed as quickly as possible. All our sites have strict safeguarding measures to prevent the spread of COVID19 and none of our sites are open to the public.

Innovative work – including a more sensitive mowing regime – to improve the bio-diversity in the verges alongside motorways and major A roads has resumed with a £1.5 million project currently underway along the M6 between junctions 38 and 39.

M6 bridge painting junction 34 to junction 35

We’re carrying out 9pm to 5am overnight maintenance, including re-painting, on two bridges – Lane Ends and Colewood footbridges – between junction 34 and junction 35 of the M6 in an eight-week project which started on Tuesday 4 August. Both the northbound and southbound carriageways will be reduced to one lane including hard shoulder running in each direction at the location of each bridge during the overnight work.  A 50mph speed limit will also be in place. No work will be taking place during the late summer bank holiday weekend (Friday 28 August to Tuesday 1 September).

M6 junction 35 to junction 36

A week of 8pm to 7am overnight work to resurface parts of the northbound carriageway started on Monday (10 August) but has been extended into next week due to poor weather. The work will now be completed by Wednesday morning (19 August). The work includes replacement of road markings and road studs. To allow us to do this work safely, lane closures and a reduced temporary speed limit of 50mph will be in place. During the overnight working periods access into and out of Burton Services will be closed.

M6 junction 36 to junction 44

Several months of round-the-clock work as part of the £1.5 million M6 Species Rich Grassland project to improve biodiversity along the motorway’s verges started last week – with occasional lane one closures along short stretches of the carriageway.  Some slip road closures will be required in the autumn. This scheme particularly increases the variety of wildflowers, improving conditions to support bees and other pollinators. Work in August will focus in the verges along both the northbound and southbound carriageways between junction 36 and junction 38.

M6 junction 38 to 39

On 16 July we started a nine-week, £1.8 million project to resurface the whole of the northbound carriageway between Tebay services and junction 39 at Shap. The work includes the replacement of road markings, road studs and drainage gullies. As the work moves along the carriageway in phases, short sections will require round-the-clock lane closures and a 50mph speed limit. Some overnight slip road closures will also be needed when the work is passing Tebay services, junction 38 and junction 39. No work will be taking place over the late summer bank holiday.

M6 junctions 36 to 43 and A66 and A595

A £3 million rolling programme of work to renew road markings and road studs along sections of the M6, A66 and A595 in Cumbria will last until September. The work is focusing on sections of the M6 between Kendal and Carlisle, the A66 west of Cockermouth and along the A595 between Distington and Thornhill. Some overnight – 8pm to 6am – lane or slip road closures and off-peak or use of temporary traffic lights will be used.

M55 junctions 1 to 3

Narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit are now in place along a short stretch of the motorway where a new junction (junction 2) is being constructed as part of Lancashire County Council’s Preston Western Distributor road project. A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool improvement

Work to deliver a £150 million new bypass and junction improvements is now underway. Information on traffic management likely to affect road users’ journeys will be included in this bulletin. From Tuesday to Friday of next week (18 to 21 August) we’ll be working along the A585 Garstang New Road – at the Windy Harbour end of the project – and using stop/go boards between 9.30am and 3.30pm to manage traffic past the works.  Anyone interested in the project can visit the project webpage at https://highwaysengland.co.uk/projects/a585-windy-harbour-to-skippool/

A590, A585 and M6 (Forton to Junction 34)

A £1 million rolling programme of overnight work to renew road markings and road studs along sections of the A590, A585 and M6 in Cumbria and Lancashire is taking place until September. The work is focusing on sections of the A590 between Dalton-in-Furness and Brettargh Holt Roundabout, the A585 between Eros Roundabout and Little Singleton and along the M6 between Forton and Lancaster. Some overnight road, lane or slip road closures and or temporary traffic signals will be used. Work along the A585 section has now been completed.
